Susan Flavell is a Fremantle based sculptor whose work is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Murdoch University, Royal Perth Hospital, Curtin University, Central TAFE and numerous local Council, Government and private collections.
Over the last decade Susan Flavell’s practice has featured a fantastic array of animal hybrids. These ambiguous and intriguing forms conjure up implausible characters in an equally imaginary dreamscape. Humans have an innate capacity to project human characteristics onto animals. This kind of anthropomorphism has ancient roots in mythology and storytelling and feeds the undercurrents in Flavell’s works. Assimilating aspects of recognisable forms, Flavell’s objects resonate strongly with the viewer with its thread of familiarity, but overall alien and ominous effects.
Her choice of medium is diverse, incorporating everything from traditional textile and sculptural techniques to found objects, papier mâché and woven cardboard. Flavell reinforces the ambiguity of her works by mimicking the appearance of cast bronze through the use of papier mâché and trompe-l'oeil.
Beyond her studio practice, Susan is also an established public artist and sculpture lecturer, at the WA School of Art, Design and Media, Central TAFE.
The cost of a subscription is $3,500. Susan will be working in a variety of mediums, and both 3 and 2 dimensional works for the commission.
